The City of Calgary is launching ChargeYYC, a new pilot program designed to support residents living in condos, apartments, townhouses, rowhouses, and other multi-residential buildings to install electric vehicle (EV) chargers. This initiative is part of The City’s commitment to prepare for the future of low carbon mobility.

The City of Calgary is working to update, simplify, and streamline Calgary’s Zoning Bylaw.

The new Zoning Bylaw will be an important tool for building the vision set out in the Calgary Plan and simplify rules that guide the use of land and form of buildings in the city. The current Land Use Bylaw has served us well, but is stuck in the past. It looks a lot like the one written decades ago, when Calgary was a very different city.

Over the weekend, we were fortunate to spend a beautiful afternoon celebrating the harvest season with the amazing community at Land of Dreams Farm.

An urban farming initiative in SE Calgary, Land of Dreams brings together community, social connection, and food in a unique way. Through partnerships with refugees and newcomers, they are pursuing food justice for underserved communities in Calgary while providing opportunities to build connection between Indigenous communities and new Calgarians through the development and cultivation of their community garden.

On the evening of Wednesday, June 5, The City discovered a large water main break in the Bowness and Montgomery area. The break is on a critical transmission line that enables us to move water across the city.

Yesterday, Calgary City Council formally approved the wind down the Green Line - Phase 1, from Lynnwood/Millican in the southeast to Eau Claire. After receiving project approval from Council in July, the withdrawal of financial support by the Alberta government earlier this month while they consider an alternate scope and alignment for a future LRT project to the southeast rendered this decision inevitable.

At this stage of the project, with 60% of the design completed and construction underway, the almost 1,000 staff, consultants, and contractors, current procurement, the more than 70 negotiated contracts, and ongoing construction are all directly tied to the previously approved alignment.

Seniors for Climate is a group of seniors deeply alarmed by the climate crisis. Their goal is to build a cross-Canada community of seniors working urgently towards climate action for a livable future for their children and grandchildren. With more than 10-million seniors in Canada, making up 30% of a (very active) voting population, their ability to guide and shift political policy is significant.

October 1st is Canada’s National Seniors Day. On this day, Seniors for Climate groups in more than 50 Canadian cities will host events to demonstrate their growing concern about climate breakdown and the need to rebuild a healthy environment for future generations.

Eco-Elders, a node of the Calgary Climate Hub, will be hosting the Calgary event at City Hall Plaza on October 1st from from 11am to 2pm. Activities include music, speeches, a flash mob, and information tables about climate and renewable energy.

What has happened to the Green Line is devastating.

It’s hard to articulate the destruction the UCP’s decision has caused- the scale of waste, the money thrown away, the opportunities lost. But the long-term consequences of this decision will be colossal too. The erosion of Alberta's credibility as a reliable, trustworthy, and collaborative partner will make future infrastructure projects throughout the province deeply challenging and exorbitantly more expensive going forward.

And yet all of this pales in comparison to the most significant loss - denying Calgarians the city-shaping transit system we desperately need and deserve. Irreversible damage has already been done.

Earlier this spring, neighbours in Manchester came together to build a new community garden space for residents to learn about and grow food, herbs, and flowers together.

Community gardens help enhance the health and well-being of neighbourhoods and communities by providing the space and opportunity for people of all skill levels to learn and interact. They are a place where people can connect with nature, better understand where their food comes from, and provide opportunities for sharing and learning.

In an era where digital innovation intersects with urban planning, the City of Calgary has unveiled its revamped Development Map (DMap) platform. This upgrade marks a significant leap forward in empowering community members, industry professionals, and partners alike with enhanced tools and functionalities to navigate and engage with planning and development initiatives across the city.

Calgary Arts Development (CADA) recently launched their 2024 public art grant program for community led projects. Recognizing that public art opportunities can come from grassroots ideas that are initiated and led by communities, CADA invites proposals for community-run public art projects. This competitive opportunity is open to community-run organizations, including informal groups that define themselves in terms of distinct communities, neighbourhood associations, and non-profit or charitable organizations.

The City of Calgary’s annual Boards, Commissions and Committees (BCCs) recruitment campaign is underway from now until Monday, September 9th, 2024 at 4:00 p.m.

BCCs provide City Council with perspective and recommendations regarding important civic issues. They also play an integral role in bringing together Calgarians and The City to achieve the common goal of strengthening the community. This rewarding opportunity allows Calgarians and Indigenous persons residing in the Treaty 7 region to actively engage in the municipal decision-making process by providing guidance to City Council.

The Secondary Suite Incentive Program is an initiative aimed at encouraging safe and accessible housing for Calgarians.

It is an action listed in the Home is Here: The City of Calgary’s Housing Strategy. It provides a qualifying homeowner up to $10,000 to cover a portion of construction costs to develop and register a safe secondary suite.
