The City of Calgary wants to highlight some important information about what Calgarians can expect at the upcoming April 22 Public Hearing Meeting of Council on Calgary's Housing Strategy 2024-2030 - Land Use Amendment Citywide, LOC2024-0017, and Land Use Bylaw Amendments, CPC2024-0213.

 This is the largest Public Hearing that The City has ever held, with more than 650 speakers registered at last count and 5,515 written submissions.

The City of Calgary is working on several projects that will guide the future of the 50 Avenue S.E. corridor. These include the Chinook Communities Local Area Plan (LAP), the Central Bus Maintenance Storage Facility (MSF) Study, and the 50 Avenue Functional Planning Study (FPS).

Calgary’s 17th annual Bike to Work Day is taking place on Friday, May 3rd, 2024!

BTWD brings together like-minded Calgarians to promote cycling as a viable means of transportation, reduce inner-city traffic congestion, and reduce pollution in the air. Cycling is a great addition to a healthy lifestyle and can be very cost-effective – not to mention how much time is saved by not sitting in traffic.

This spring, and effective immediately, the City of Calgary is implementing a Water Reductions Advisory, asking Calgarians to reduce their water use and make every drop count. As more and more people begin their outdoor yard work, it is important to remember that Alberta continues to experience high levels of drought. Together, we can make every drop count and help manage water supply in the Bow and Elbow Rivers.

Alberta Bike Swap provides a safe place to buy, sell, and donate bikes, fund safe CAN-BIKE cycling education, provide bike racks, pledge cyclists in charity rides, and help others with transportation security. Annual events happen in both Calgary and Edmonton. Over the last 14 years, Alberta Bike Swap has helped thousands of people find their perfect bike.

This years Calgary event is taking place Saturday, May 4th at the Max Bell Centre.

One of the best days of the year is just around the corner!  Neighbour Day is Calgary’s celebration of community connection. Held each year on the third Saturday in June, Neighbour Day is a step toward creating welcoming and inclusive communities where neighbours connect and belong every day of the year.

Neighbour Day 2024 will include two kick-off events on May 4 to help raise awareness of Neighbour Day and invite Calgarians to start planning their own Neighbour Day block party or community event for June 15.  

The City of Calgary is moving into Phase 3: Reveal of the Memorial Drive Extension Functional Planning Study this Spring 2024.

This phase marks a pivotal moment in the project, where we will unveil the recommended plan and seek valuable input from interested community members.

Partnering with The Alex Community Food Centre, Ward 9 will be hosting two information sessions for community members to learn about how to engage with and speak to city council at public hearings.

Both sessions will align with a free community meal.

The City of Calgary is exploring a Land Use change and public space improvements at the Franklin CTrain Station, located in the community of Albert Park/Radisson Heights.

The project area includes the south Park’n’Ride lot of the station, nearby park space, and the appearance of a portion of Radcliffe Drive SE. The focus of the project is to improve mobility, connectivity, and safety to and from Franklin Station, and prepare the site for future residential development to help address current housing shortages and affordability.

Once complete, the project will create a vibrant, affordable, and sustainable community.

Since 2017, the Federation of Calgary Communities has provided communities and organizations with microgrant funding opportunities through the ActivateYYC program. These grants contribute to the transformation of space-to-place throughout Calgary's landscape, and foster valuable community connections in the process.

You and your community could receive up to $5,000 to put towards your project.

Jane’s Walk 2024 is back and taking place May 3rd through 5th. Calgarians of all ages are invited to participate in free walking tours throughout a variety of communities and areas of interest in the city!

A global event inspired by and in honour of Jane Jacobs, an urbanist and activist who championed a fresh, community-based approach to city building. Jane believed that in order to properly observe how people, through their actions and interactions, create communities with a strong sense of belonging, we need to get out and walk the city.

In order to facilitate urgent electrical repairs, Bob Bahan Aquatic & Fitness Centre will need to temporarily close.

Beginning April 14, 2024, service will be reduced to only swimming lessons and swim clubs in preparation for the repairs, followed by a full facility closure on May 6, 2024. At this time, we anticipate the facility will be closed for approximately three to four months.

Did you know that currently more than 97% of R-CG rezoning applications brought before council are approved?

Some of the feedback we’ve heard about rezoning is that people are most often ok with the allowance of duplexes, but can feel less certain about the change to permit row houses. The City estimates that over the course of the next 3-4 years, we will begin to see a city-wide shift in row house applications from about 150 submissions annually, growing to about 500 submissions annually before things level off. Over a 10 year span, that equates to about 3,900 parcels changing from single-family or duplexes to row houses.

As part of the City’s ongoing efforts to further public traffic safety education, the Mobility team is launching a new public education contest targeting Calgary students registered in Grades 6-12.

The Travel Safe Student Video Contest invites students to create an original short video to promote safety while traveling on city streets, sidewalks and/or pathways. The contest is run by the City of Calgary with support from additional community partners including the Calgary Police Service and Calgary Public Library

The City encourages residents to be water-wise and use a rain barrel this spring

Calgary is currently experiencing drought conditions. Together we can make every drop count in our yards by using water wisely. Harnessing rainwater for watering your yard and garden is a simple, yet effective way to reduce your water use by acting as a backup source of water during this drought.

Community Cleanup events save residents a trip to the landfill for items that do not fit in their black carts. The City of Calgary suppled packer trucks with crews, funds for advertising and promotion, face coverings, sanitizer, gloves, and garbage bags for community volunteers. This service is free of charge to all Calgarians.

All Community Cleanup events occur on Saturdays and Sundays throughout the spring and fall session.

The Calgary Soccer Centre (CSC) has been experiencing increased demand for indoor multi-use recreation space for its users. The site currently has three (3) artificial turf (AT) fields and one (1) Class B natural turf field.

This project will incorporate much needed upgrades to the Class B natural turf field by converting it to an artificial turf field which will be covered by an air supported structure (dome) and attached amenity building for year-round opportunities to practice, play, train and compete in.

During a recent Special Meeting of Council, a group of councillors brought forward a Notice of Motion to hold a plebiscite on the city-wide rezoning changes recommended in the City of Calgary's Housing Strategy. This motion was ultimately defeated, with Councillor Carra being among the eight council members who voted against the Notice of Motion.
