4th Avenue Flyover Rehabilitation
The 4th Avenue Flyover will undergo rehabilitation starting in April 2024. This work is planned to carry through winter 2024-2025 and be completed in the Fall of 2025 . This flyover was constructed in 1982 and at an overall 430-meter span, the structure crosses over the Bow River and is Calgary's longest bridge. The flyover carries two lanes of traffic towards 3rd Street S.E. and is one of the primary routes into downtown.
The 4th Avenue Flyover Rehabilitation Project is part of our normal rehabilitation program as this bridge was identified as a candidate for repair.
The scope of work will consist of improvements to the structure of the flyover, including: • rebuilding existing concrete barriers and adding lighting
replacing existing concrete paving overlay with a polymer modified asphalt (PMA) overlay
replacing existing expansion joints, and other general concrete repairs across the structure
The project benefits include:
Improving the condition of the flyover by adding streetlights
Extending the service life of the flyover by roughly 35 years
Improving one critical link in the transportation network to help with Calgary’s continued growth in the coming years extending the service life of the flyover by roughly 35 years
Construction
Construction is anticipated to start in April 2024 and be completed by late fall 2025, with site preparations beginning in March 2024.
Upcoming impacts are noted below:
Tuesday, April 2nd to Friday, April 5th – Off-peak single lane closures on the flyover to conduct pre-construction site surveys.
Friday, April 5th at 9 p.m. to Monday, April 8th at 5 a.m. – Complete closure of the flyover to set up construction.
Starting Monday, April 8th – One lane on the flyover will be closed (24/7) and accordingly traffic will be reduced to a single lane.
We will make every effort to minimize impacts. Throughout construction, there may be lane closures of underpass roads for overhead work. These closures will be temporary and during off-peak hours.
Motorists should expect delays and traffic congestion due to reduced lanes and speed limits. Commuters are advised to allow extra travel time and use alternative routes when possible.
Construction activities are dependent on several factors. Timelines may change due to inclement weather, complexity, supply chain, and/or other unexpected circumstances.
