The City of Calgary has recently launched its Anti-Racism Strategic Plan, Dismantling Systemic Racism, Transforming Lives: The City of Calgary Anti-Racism Strategic Plan 2023-2027. This Strategic Plan results from engagements with employees and community members over several months. The plan is designed to guide The City to ensure that all Calgarians, including Indigenous, Black, and diverse Racialized Peoples have equitable access to services and programs and City employees can thrive within the organization.

Improving Housing Affordability and Access for Calgarians

Calgary’s Housing and Affordability Task Force released today six recommendations that, if implemented, would create a more equitable, inclusive, and affordable housing market in Calgary across the housing continuum, and ensure that all Calgarians have access to safe, adequate, and affordable housing.

The Housing and Affordability Task Force was created and tasked to address Calgary’s housing crisis and the urgent need for more housing and housing affordability in Calgary.

Downtown Public Washroom Attendant Pilot

The City of Calgary is launching a Downtown Washroom Attendant Pilot Project this spring in two busy downtown parks—Olympic Plaza and Century Gardens.

The City is partnering with Alberta Alliance Who Educate and Advocate Responsibly (AAWEAR) for this pilot. AAWEAR will hire, supervise, and train the washroom attendants.

AAWEAR’s Calgary peer outreach team has been helping people navigate the web of resources, drawing from their own lived experience, since 2004. This project will create connections between service providers and the people in need of services. All AAWEAR staff members are either people who come from lived or living experience of mental health, substance use, and houselessness, and/or individuals who are empathetic to the cause. AAWEAR’s impact in the community has created pathways to essential care and employment. This project is an ideal continuation of that work.

Event Centre + Rivers District Development Update

In a moment when our health, education, and justice systems are in crisis, as we face the monumental task of providing sufficient housing for every person that currently calls Calgary home as well as those who will come to our city in the decades ahead, as we search for stability and opportunity while the very real ramifications of climate change surge, I am deeply sympathetic to outrage that the current government’s election-time priority for Calgary is an Event Centre for Calgary’s professional sports franchise elite. However, there is also a range of inaccurate information and misdirection of discontent circulating alongside this news- all of which continues to polarize and further divide our community.

Free TLC Kits! 56th Annual Pathway and River Cleanup

Taking place May 5-7, 2023, the 56th Annual Pathway and River Cleanup will see thousands of volunteers generously donating their time to help clean up litter in our parks and along nearly 200 kilometers of our pathways and riverbanks.

Registration for the event is closed but you can still help keep our city clean. Get your free TLC kit to organize a small cleanup in your neighbourhood. The City offers free ‘The Litter Cleanup’ (TLC) kits that contain enough supplies (gloves, garbage bags, etc.) for up to six people. Kits can be picked up from the Inglewood Bird Sanctuary Wednesday – Sunday between 10am – 4pm.

Calgary River Valleys Project Public Engagement April 2023

Calgary’s river valleys are essential to our city—they’re at the core of our city’s identity and its appeal as a place to live, play and do business.

The City is planning for the future of our river valleys through the Calgary River Valleys Project. The purpose of the project is to provide guidance for decisions about how we plan, develop and build in our river valley. The result will be coordinated and purposeful land use policies that may make use of a range of levers, including reserves, setbacks, densities, and different types of land uses

This is an opportunity for all Calgarians to voice what is important to them about the city’s river valleys, to ensure that those values shape approaches to development, recreation, natural space, and flood hazard planning.

Early engagement takes place April 27 – June 5, focused on clarifying priorities and values for our river valley communities. Participate in the conversation at Calgary.ca/RiverValleys.

Calling all creative kids!

What is your favourite thing in Ward 9?

Maybe you know of the best local place to eat, or a delicious neighbourhood treat? Do you have a cool nearby park or an epic playground? Perhaps you love your school or have a special place you or your family always visit?

Whatever you love about Ward 9, we want to hear about it!

Draw or paint a picture of your favourite thing in Ward 9 and ask a grownup to help you share it with the Ward 9 office for a chance to win some awesome prizes!

We will draw winners at random to receive a pair of tickets to either TELUS Spark or the Calgary Zoo. Your piece of art will also be kept on file to potentially be featured on an upcoming Ward 9 map!

To enter, simply email a photograph of your creation to caward@calgary.ca and include your first name, age, and a description of what your artwork is about.

The contest is open to all Calgary residents under the age of 14 and will run until May 31, 2023. Winners will be contacted by email in early June to receive their tickets.

Street Sweeping begins Monday, April 17th, 2023!

As we roll into spring, Calgarians are looking forward to clean streets in their neighbourhoods that are free of dirt and debris. Over the next few days, the first scheduled communities will see signs go up indicating their sweeping date, as the program begins on Monday, April 17. Residential street sweeping runs Monday through Friday from 8am to 4pm.

Calgarians can find their scheduled sweeping date by visiting calgary.ca/sweep, where they can use the address lookup. We also encourage all Calgarians to sign up for e-mail and text notification reminders.

Earthware Takeout Containers Now Accepted at Albert Bottle Depots!

In one year, 450 million single-use takeout containers, both plastic and compostable, go into Alberta's landfill. That equates to over 23,275 garbage bags and 209 tons of CO² per day.

By switching to reusable products, we affect change along the entire chain - material sourcing, production, shipping, and disposal or repurposing of resources.

That’s where Earthware comes in - a social enterprise offering a return-for-reuse zero waste takeout container program. Earthware’s aim is to keep single-use takeout containers out of landfills, while still allowing for everyone to enjoy the convenience of takeout.

Bridge Expansion Joint Replacement - 17th Ave SE + Bonnybrook Bridge

The City through its annual bridge inspection program has identified deterioration of expansion joints at various bridge locations across the City and scheduled repairs on a priority basis. Eight structures were completed under the program in 2021/2022 and seven more are scheduled to be completed this year.

The timely repair/replacement of these joints must be carried out to maintain a safe traffic service and prevent future unplanned road closures. This project will extend the service life of the bridges and improve safety for drivers.

10th Annual Neighbour Day - Saturday, June 17th!

Neighbour Day started in June 2014 to celebrate the incredible outpouring of support and generosity of neighbours following the 2013 floods. Each year on the third Saturday in June, we continue to celebrate one of the things that makes Calgary such a great city — our strong and caring communities.

Now is the time to start planning! The 10th annual Neighbour Day will be held on Saturday, June 17 and provides the opportunity for Calgarians to celebrate our community spirit and kindness by helping to facilitate enjoyable activities for everyone!

Compostable Pet Waste Pilot

A pilot project to test the feasibility of composting pet waste from off-leash dog parks kicked off on April 3. Tom Campbell’s Hill in Ward 9 and Queen’s Park Village in Ward 4 were selected for this pilot. The parks will be set up with modified green bins and ample signage encouraging pet owners to place pet waste in certified compostable bags in the green bins onsite.

Because the success of this pilot relies almost exclusively on resident actions, it is important for pet owners to be conscious of the type of bag they are using to collect pet waste before using the green compost bins.

Ward 9 Jane's Walk Roundup!

Jane’s Walk 2023 is taking place May 5, 6 + 7. Calgarians of all ages are invited to participate in free walking tours throughout the city!

A global event inspired by and in honour of Jane Jacobs, an urbanist and activist who championed a fresh, community-based approach to city building. Jane believed that in order to properly observe how people, through their actions and interactions, create communities with a strong sense of belonging, we need to get out and walk the city.

2023 Community Cleanup Dates

Community Cleanup events save residents a trip to the landfill for items that do not fit in their waste and recycling carts or for residents who do not have access to cart service. This service is free of charge to all Calgarians.

Jane's Walk 2023: The Death and Life of Inglewood

Join Councillor Gian-Carlo Carra as he interprets Inglewood through the books of Jane Jacobs and evokes discussion on neighbourhoods. This walk will discuss Jane’s first and last books as illustrated by a couple of blocks within Inglewood. Our community faced the same threats, within the same era, that Jane Jacob’s Greenwich Village faced in NYC. The Death and Life of Great American Cities, while not ours, is a testament to the power and the beauty of communities at their best in the face of the worst – it is almost ours.

FOREST LAWN PARK REDEVELOPMENT

The Forest Lawn Community Association has partnered with the Parks Foundation to bring a new amenity to the area! The design will be accessible for all ages and a variety of user groups. The park will offer opportunities for play, rejuvenation, gathering, and physical activity. New amenities in the park might include a sport court, seating, and community gathering area, and pathways. The hope is to begin work on this park this summer.

March 31st is Transgender Day of Visibility, a day dedicated to recognizing the resilience and accomplishments of transgender and gender-nonconforming people. On this day, we celebrate the lives, experiences, contributions, diversity, and beauty of transgender and gender-diverse people, and commit to protecting trans voices, trans lives, trans happiness, and safety.

There will be a city-wide Drag Day of Solidarity happening on April 1st! With nearly 40 local businesses hosting all-ages and 18+ events all over Calgary and Okotoks, there has never been a better (or easier time) to show your love and support!

NEW Urban Hen Licensing Program

After the success of the 2022 urban hen pilot project that allowed 100 people to keep backyard hens, The City of Calgary is pleased to announce the official launch of a much-anticipated program recognizing urban hens as licenced pets under the updated Responsible Pet Ownership (RPO) Bylaw.
