The City of Calgary is moving into Phase 3: Reveal of the Memorial Drive Extension Functional Planning Study this Spring 2024.

This phase marks a pivotal moment in the project, where we will unveil the recommended plan and seek valuable input from interested community members.

Partnering with The Alex Community Food Centre, Ward 9 will be hosting two information sessions for community members to learn about how to engage with and speak to city council at public hearings.

Both sessions will align with a free community meal.

The City of Calgary is exploring a Land Use change and public space improvements at the Franklin CTrain Station, located in the community of Albert Park/Radisson Heights.

The project area includes the south Park’n’Ride lot of the station, nearby park space, and the appearance of a portion of Radcliffe Drive SE. The focus of the project is to improve mobility, connectivity, and safety to and from Franklin Station, and prepare the site for future residential development to help address current housing shortages and affordability.

Once complete, the project will create a vibrant, affordable, and sustainable community.

Since 2017, the Federation of Calgary Communities has provided communities and organizations with microgrant funding opportunities through the ActivateYYC program. These grants contribute to the transformation of space-to-place throughout Calgary's landscape, and foster valuable community connections in the process.

Jane’s Walk 2024 is back and taking place May 3rd through 5th. Calgarians of all ages are invited to participate in free walking tours throughout a variety of communities and areas of interest in the city!

A global event inspired by and in honour of Jane Jacobs, an urbanist and activist who championed a fresh, community-based approach to city building. Jane believed that in order to properly observe how people, through their actions and interactions, create communities with a strong sense of belonging, we need to get out and walk the city.

In order to facilitate urgent electrical repairs, Bob Bahan Aquatic & Fitness Centre will need to temporarily close.

Beginning April 14, 2024, service will be reduced to only swimming lessons and swim clubs in preparation for the repairs, followed by a full facility closure on May 6, 2024. At this time, we anticipate the facility will be closed for approximately three to four months.

Did you know that currently more than 97% of R-CG rezoning applications brought before council are approved?

Some of the feedback we’ve heard about rezoning is that people are most often ok with the allowance of duplexes, but can feel less certain about the change to permit row houses. The City estimates that over the course of the next 3-4 years, we will begin to see a city-wide shift in row house applications from about 150 submissions annually, growing to about 500 submissions annually before things level off. Over a 10 year span, that equates to about 3,900 parcels changing from single-family or duplexes to row houses.

As part of the City’s ongoing efforts to further public traffic safety education, the Mobility team is launching a new public education contest targeting Calgary students registered in Grades 6-12.

The Travel Safe Student Video Contest invites students to create an original short video to promote safety while traveling on city streets, sidewalks and/or pathways. The contest is run by the City of Calgary with support from additional community partners including the Calgary Police Service and Calgary Public Library

The City encourages residents to be water-wise and use a rain barrel this spring

Calgary is currently experiencing drought conditions. Together we can make every drop count in our yards by using water wisely. Harnessing rainwater for watering your yard and garden is a simple, yet effective way to reduce your water use by acting as a backup source of water during this drought.

Community Cleanup events save residents a trip to the landfill for items that do not fit in their black carts. The City of Calgary suppled packer trucks with crews, funds for advertising and promotion, face coverings, sanitizer, gloves, and garbage bags for community volunteers. This service is free of charge to all Calgarians.

All Community Cleanup events occur on Saturdays and Sundays throughout the spring and fall session.

The Calgary Soccer Centre (CSC) has been experiencing increased demand for indoor multi-use recreation space for its users. The site currently has three (3) artificial turf (AT) fields and one (1) Class B natural turf field.

This project will incorporate much needed upgrades to the Class B natural turf field by converting it to an artificial turf field which will be covered by an air supported structure (dome) and attached amenity building for year-round opportunities to practice, play, train and compete in.

During a recent Special Meeting of Council, a group of councillors brought forward a Notice of Motion to hold a plebiscite on the city-wide rezoning changes recommended in the City of Calgary's Housing Strategy. This motion was ultimately defeated, with Councillor Carra being among the eight council members who voted against the Notice of Motion. The 57th Annual Pathway and River Cleanup activates thousands of volunteers who generously donate their time to help clean up Calgary.

The 2024 Pathway and River Cleanup is May 3 – 5, 2024.

Calgarians are invited to share their thoughts on what effective representation at the municipal level means to them. This public engagement is part of a larger review being conducted by the Ward Boundary Commission as directed by Calgary City Council in June 2023.

This review won’t change the number of wards or Councillors in Calgary, and it is not about individual members of Council. The purpose is to understand how Calgarians want to be represented by Council, what that could look like in the future, as well as looking at the role of Council and the effectiveness of the systems they work within. Your feedback will be used to inform recommendations made to City Council by the Commission. 

Calgary is in a housing crisis and we need more homes.

One of the Housing Affordability Task Force Recommendations is to implement inclusive zoning throughout the city to help fix our growing housing supply shortage.

How will rezoning help?

Because inclusive zoning means more housing. By eliminating red tape and streamlining our costs and processes, we are allowing more variety of housing to be build faster and with less upfront costs.

Mark your calendars! The Youth Employment Centre’s 25th annual Youth Hiring Fair is rolling into the Big Four Building on Thursday, March 28 from 1:30 to 6 p.m.

If you are between the ages of 15-24, this is your opportunity to secure a part-time, full-time, permanent or seasonal job. With 80+ employers, the event is a hub of possibilities to obtain meaningful employment.

This event is the largest youth hiring fair in Calgary. Since 1999, over 1,900 employers have attended YEC’s hiring fairs, serving over 92,000 youth.

Thanks to the incredible dedication of hundreds of volunteers in over 30 community kitchens across Calgary, BB4CK is able to deliver 6000+ lunches every single day to students in more than 230 schools all over the city.

With 21% of Calgarians reporting struggles with food security and the ability to buy groceries for themselves and their families, BB4CK is helping to bridge the gap for kids that may otherwise go without.

Through a partnership with GFL Environmental, The City of Calgary officially has a new Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) to provide additional recycling services and increased recycling capacity to Calgarians.

The new facility is just outside the city limits in Rocky View County, and is owned and operated by GFL. The MRF leverages cutting-edge sorting technology, including Al robotics, ballistics, and optical sorters that use digital recognition to identify and separate and sort recyclables in milliseconds.

By recycling, we conserve resources by putting materials back to productive uses. Recycling also helps conserve finite space in our landfills through significant waste diversion. GFL ensures that recyclables only go to legitimate recyclers that have been screened through a comprehensive vetting process, and operates in compliance with all applicable environmental regulations.
