Deerfoot Trail Improvements: Sanitary Force Main Relocation.
The Province of Alberta is currently working on Deerfoot Trail Improvements in Ward 9, which includes the relocation of a large sanitary force main from the Deerfoot Trail corridor to 12 Street SE. This work is expected to begin in mid-March and carry through to the summer of 2025.
Sanitary Force Main Relocation
The sanitary force main is a key part of the City of Calgary’s underground sanitary sewer system that transports sanitary sewer effluent between the Bonnybrook and Fish Creek sewage treatment plants.
The work will be completed in segments ensuring utility services and road access will be maintained throughout the project.
Elm Tree Removals
This work will require the removal of several elm trees along the east side of 12 Street SE, north of 64 Avenue SE. Arborist crews will be on site beginning the week of March 17, 2025, aiming to complete all tree removals prior to the end of March. To prevent the potential risk of spreading Dutch Elm Disease, all pruned branches, trunks, and stumps will be destroyed, and cannot be repurposed.
The City of Calgary works to preserve as many trees as possible throughout construction, and removing trees is always a last resort. However, to make improvements in the area, some tree loss is unavoidable. Approximately 35 trees are required to be removed as part of Alberta Transportation and Economic Corridors Deerfoot Trail Improvements sanitary force main relocation.
Whenever tree removals are necessary, removal costs are paid to the City of Calgary. The City will then assess where additional canopy is needed citywide and uses the locations identified to replant sufficient new trees to replace those removed, helping to replenish our urban canopy.
Construction Impacts
To minimize traffic and parking impacts for businesses along 12 Street SE, Aecon’s arborist crews will be working during nighttime hours, from 9pm to 5am, Monday to Sunday, ensuring timely completion.
Anticipated impacts on the nearby community may include temporary parking restrictions, lane closures, construction noise and vibrations during both the tree removal work and later in the year with the actual construction activities. Flag persons will assist with traffic management.
