The Salvation Army East Calgary Community Hub has partnered with Antyx Community Art Society to create a new mural on the wall at the Salvation Army East Campus.

Youth ages 12-18 are invited to participate in the brainstorming, design, and mural painting throughout the 10-week collaboration. These sessions focus on community, belonging and identity, while providing youth with opportunities to learn more about the process of large-scale mural painting.

On October 29th, Calgary City Council will be forced to participate in a political process initiated by the Alberta UCP Government, introduced into our meeting through a Notice of Motion by Councillor Dan McLean. This discussion arises from a suggestion made by UCP Minister of Mental Health and Addictions, Dan Williams, as well as the Premiere, that Calgary City Council should determine whether Alberta Health Services’ supervised consumption site at the Sheldon Chumir Health Centre should continue operating.

Beginning the first week of November (November 4 – 8), Waste & Recycling Services will resume the winter green cart collection schedule by transitioning to an every-other-week schedule. This change is seasonal, and regular weekly collections will recommence in April.

It's important for our residents to be aware of this change. For their convenience, they can refer to calgary.ca/collection to view the updated collection schedule, register for timely reminders, or alternatively download the Calgary Garbage Day app for reminders.

The City is hosting its sixth annual Calgary Climate Symposium to continue the conversation about climate change, how it affects Calgarians and what we can do together to build a more resilient city. The symposium is a FREE event, open to the public, that offers a total of ten learning sessions.

Minister of Transportation and Economic Corridors Devin Dreeshen and Calgary Mayor Jyoti Gondek issued the following statement on the next steps for Calgary’s Green Line LRT project:

“Over the past few weeks, the City of Calgary and Alberta's Government have engaged in productive discussions to deliver a Green Line that meets the needs of Calgary’s commuters and preserves value from the previous Phase 1 of the project.

Who is Ward 9? Our newest map is almost ready to be released and will help answer that exact question.

We are the stories we tell ourselves, and this map aims to tells a new story of Ward 9 - one that challenges common assumptions and celebrates the diverse and inspiring people who call it home.

Through a partnership between Alpha House, Distress Centre, Calgary Police Service, and City of Calgary, District 4 (which includes most Ward 9 communities east of Deerfoot Trail) now has a call diversion program available to residents seeking assistance for non-emergency social disorder concerns.

Call 2-1-1 and the Alpha House HELP team will be deployed when EMS or CPS response is not required. HELP aims to be onsite within 20 minutes, and works to divert socially complex, high need individuals from law enforcement response and unnecessary healthcare use at the street level.

The Inglewood Aquatic Centre has been identified as one of 13 City-operated recreation facilities that require major electrical repairs. While there is no safety risk for customers or staff accessing the facility, there is a risk the electrical system could unexpectedly fail. In consideration of Council’s prior decision to permanently close the facility and to reduce the risk of sudden impacts to customers and swim clubs, Inglewood Aquatic Centre will close on December 22, 2024.

While we understand and share in the collective disappointment at the loss of this notable recreation amenity in Ward 9, we also want to convey a few key points that lead to this decision.  

The City of Calgary is launching ChargeYYC, a new pilot program designed to support residents living in condos, apartments, townhouses, rowhouses, and other multi-residential buildings to install electric vehicle (EV) chargers. This initiative is part of The City’s commitment to prepare for the future of low carbon mobility.

The City of Calgary is working to update, simplify, and streamline Calgary’s Zoning Bylaw.

The new Zoning Bylaw will be an important tool for building the vision set out in the Calgary Plan and simplify rules that guide the use of land and form of buildings in the city. The current Land Use Bylaw has served us well, but is stuck in the past. It looks a lot like the one written decades ago, when Calgary was a very different city.

Over the weekend, we were fortunate to spend a beautiful afternoon celebrating the harvest season with the amazing community at Land of Dreams Farm.

An urban farming initiative in SE Calgary, Land of Dreams brings together community, social connection, and food in a unique way. Through partnerships with refugees and newcomers, they are pursuing food justice for underserved communities in Calgary while providing opportunities to build connection between Indigenous communities and new Calgarians through the development and cultivation of their community garden.

On the evening of Wednesday, June 5, The City discovered a large water main break in the Bowness and Montgomery area. The break is on a critical transmission line that enables us to move water across the city.

Yesterday, Calgary City Council formally approved the wind down the Green Line - Phase 1, from Lynnwood/Millican in the southeast to Eau Claire. After receiving project approval from Council in July, the withdrawal of financial support by the Alberta government earlier this month while they consider an alternate scope and alignment for a future LRT project to the southeast rendered this decision inevitable.

At this stage of the project, with 60% of the design completed and construction underway, the almost 1,000 staff, consultants, and contractors, current procurement, the more than 70 negotiated contracts, and ongoing construction are all directly tied to the previously approved alignment.
