The Alpha House DOAP Team is now named HELP

Since 2005, the Alpha House Society has operated the DOAP Team, working hard to build it into the service it has become; assisting people under the influence of drugs and alcohol who need help navigating shelter, detox, medical services, housing, and other programs and resources while reducing pressure on Calgary Police, EMS, Transit, Bylaw, and local city hospitals. The work their outreach teams have accomplished is commendable and has expanded over the years to include encampment, Needle Response, and Ambassador programs.

Originally known as the Downtown Outreach Addictions Partnership (DOAP) team, their outreach services have since expanded to include all quadrants of the city. As such, the DOAP program will be renamed HELP (Human-centered Engagement and Liaison Partnership). The name change does not alter Alpha House's internal or external operations; its focus will continue to remain the same through outreach work, partnerships, and supports for street-involved individuals.

HMCS Calgary 1st Annual Road Hockey Rodeo!

Together, the Friends of HMCS Committee & the crew from the HMCS Calgary are planning the 1st Annual Road Hockey Rodeo!

The 1st annual Road Hockey Rodeo will create an inclusive, healthy, and fun youth activity with navy sailors during Stampede that strengthens the relationship between the ship and the community, and generates donations which benefit local Calgary charities and Calgarians.

Youth en Route - INSPIRING SAFE, ACTIVE TRAVEL TO SCHOOL AND BEYOND

Team Ward 9 was fortunate to be able to spend some time with two amazing local organizations doing important work to empower and engage youth in cycling - Two Wheel View and Youth en Route.

We met with Laura Shutiak, Executive Director of Youth en Route and Merve, a volunteer from the Bike Shed at the GFL 55+ Seniors Club. Their partnership has enabled the delivery of hundreds of bikes to schools and students throughout Calgary!

2023 Aboriginal Awareness Week Calgary

The theme for 2023 Aboriginal Awareness Week Calgary is “KEEPING THE CIRCLE STRONG – “Honoring Mother Earth and water” reflects the pride that First Nations, Métis, and Inuit communities take in their rich heritage, traditions, and cultures through being the caretakers of Mother Earth and water the giver of life.

From June 18 - 24, 2023 there will be a variety of events throughout the city to honour Aboriginal Awareness Week and to celebrate National Indigenous Peoples Day on June 21st.

Sled Island's Ramsay Block Party

WHAT WE HEARD REPORT: MEMORIAL DRIVE EAST - FUNCTIONAL PLANNING STUDY

The Memorial Drive Extension Functional Planning Study What We Heard Report has been posted to the project page.

Thank you to everyone that volunteered their time and input during Phase 2. A recommended plan will be presented to the public in Phase 3 - Reveal to allow community members to learn more about the recommendations and provide feedback to help the project refine the final plan for approval. We anticipate this will happen sometime in the fall of 2023.

First up, we meet with Laura Istead, Executive Director of Two Wheel View, and got to meet some of the incredible staff and volunteers at their Inglewood Community Hub.

E-Bike pilot at two CTrain stations offers first 10 minutes free

In recognition of Bike Month in June, The City of Calgary is celebrating with a new pilot program and safety campaign aimed at e-Bike users.

Beginning June 1, The City of Calgary will be making 30 shared e-Bikes available for use at two CTrain stations – Ward 9’s Franklin Station and Canyon Meadows. Under the pilot program, the two micromobility providers, Bird Canada and Neuron, have agreed to give riders, who jump on an e-Bike at one of the two stations, the first 10 minutes of their trip free, once a day.

The City will again be offering a variety of fun and free programs and activities in communities across Calgary this summer.

Ensuring that Calgarians have affordable and accessible recreation and social program opportunities helps to enhance individual, family, and community well-being by encouraging community interactions, social cohesion, and healthy lifestyles.

Parents can bring their children to both structured and open-play opportunities, featuring games, arts, crafts, entertainment, and educational experiences;
Youth can learn leadership skills and critical thinking in our LEAD programs
Teens and adults can take part in a guided workout with a certified trainer at one of our Fit Parks; and,
Calgarians of all ages can stay active and have a blast at our mobile skateparks and tennis/pickleball courts.

Sport Calgary - Free Sports for Kids!

Sport Calgary is hosting a new initiative across various communities in Calgary, called All Sport One Community. This project will be in Ward 9 on July 2nd in Dover and August 5th in Ogden!

The goal is to engage individuals of all ages in sport, play, and active living. Participants will benefit from trying sports they previously did not feel were accessible or did not know were available to them within their community. By partnering with sport organizations located in the area where the event is being held to deliver the sports, participants will be able to directly join a program afterward if they are interested.

2023 Ward 9 Annual Major Paving Projects

The City's annual paving program is a widespread portfolio comprised of many major road paving projects and smaller projects localized within select communities (managed by The City's Mobility team). Our paving team's focus is pavement rehabilitation work, typically on some of Calgary's busiest routes. As part of the City of Calgary's ongoing efforts to improve and maintain infrastructure, the paving program plays an essential role in ensuring our streets and sidewalks are safe and accessible for all citizens.

This season, work is anticipated to begin in June and continue through to October. The main priority of the program is asphalt roadway repair or replacement however work may also include localized repair and replacement of concrete sidewalks, wheelchair ramps, and curbs and gutters. We understand that this work may cause some disruptions to your community, and it’s our goal to do what we can to minimize impacts.

2023 Summer Aquatic Service Adjustments.

As many industries have experienced over the last several years, the City of Calgary continues to experience challenges in recruiting and hiring certificated candidates for swim instructors and lifeguards. These staffing shortages have resulted in reduced operational capacity and program cutbacks.

The City continues to hire staff and increase service levels so they are more aligned with the expectations of Calgarians. Overall service delivery has returned to 85 percent of pre-pandemic levels.

HMCS Calgary's 28th Anniversary

This past weekend, we were honoured to be able to celebrate the 28th anniversary of the HMCS Calgary’s commissioning.

As our city’s namesake ship, HMCS Calgary conducts Royal Canadian Navy operations in support of Canada’s domestic and international policies.

Guests were invited to experience a variety of unique events, including a guided tour of the HMCS Ottawa Warship and a day sail demonstration on an ORCA Patrol Vessel. Events over the weekend all helped to raise funds for the ship’s official charity - the Foothill Hospital Burn Unit.
