Western Headworks Canal: Upcoming Outfall Repairs
The City of Calgary has scheduled upcoming repairs to outfalls IC1 and IC2 near the Max Bell Arena. Construction is expected to begin in mid-November and will be complete in two to three weeks.
Background
The City’s Outfall Repair Program Work repairs many of the aging and damaged outfalls along the Western Headworks Canal.
This work is beneficial because damaged outfalls can lead to storm drain backups during heavy rainfall events resulting in impacts to both public and private property and the safety of citizens.
A damaged outfall could also lead to riverbank erosion and cause damage to infrastructure like pathways, sidewalks, roads and private property, especially in the event of a flood.
Construction Details & Anticipated Impacts
Work at these outfalls will include reconnecting pipes that have separated over time, installing new riprap to reduce the water’s force before entering the canal and restoring any areas on the slope that get disturbed during construction.
Work will be done between the hours of 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday to Friday, with the possibility of some work on Saturdays.
Possible increased noise levels due to construction.
