Bridgeland Active Modes Improvements – Construction Update
Although we were hopeful to finish construction on the Bridetland Active Modes Improvements this year, warm and dry weather is necessary in order to complete the remaining work. Due to inclement weather, construction timelines for this project have changed. The remainder of the work is now being scheduled to be completed in the 2024 construction season.
Completed construction activities so far:
Since construction began in mid-July 2023, the following work has been completed:
A raised wheeling lane was built on the south side of McDougall Road from 6 Street N.E. to 8 Street N.E. and 9 Street N.E. to 11A Street N.E.
Added and repaired sidewalks and wheelchair ramps along the south side of the corridor
Converted the 8 Street N.E. intersection to two-way travel
Crews completed milling and paving on McDougall Road between 6 Street N.E. and 12 Street N.E. in late October 2023
The following construction activities will be completed in spring 2024:
Building a protected on-street wheeling lane on the north side of McDougall Road from 6 Street to 12 Street N.E.
The City will be piloting different types of wheeling separators along the McDougall corridor. There will be a delay in implementing this Wheeling Lane pilot until spring 2024, once the protected wheeling lane is completed.
Narrowing the pedestrian crossings at the following locations to make it safer for people to cross the road:
Centre Avenue and 9 Street N.E.
St. Matthew Square and 9 Street N.E.
Next Steps for this project
The contractor will be in the community for a few more weeks in November. The contractor will be cleaning up and finishing some work on the corridor, before coming back in spring 2024 to complete construction activities.
Please sign-up for the newsletter for more information on construction activities for this project. All construction is weather-dependent, and every effort will be taken to minimize disruption to residents and businesses during construction in 2024.
