. Looking for outdoor activities this summer? The City of Calgary offers FREE, supervised fun for the whole family. Whether you’re a child, a youth, an adult, or a family looking for quality time together, there’s something good for everyone starting this July.

These supervised outdoor programs are carefully crafted to foster new friendships and exciting learning opportunities. From dynamic drop-in programs like Stay n’ Play, and popup adventure parks, to engaging registered youth leadership initiatives and skateboarding lessons, there’s an activity fit for every interest and age group.

The Calgary Bears are offering FREE camps to introduce flag football to Calgary youth. Open to kids ages 7-16, youth learn catch and cover skills ending with some friendly competition. With 5v5 flag football joining the Olympics in 2028, these sessions provide an opportunity for youth to learn the game and strive for the top.

The Partners In Planning program has partnered with City Building to bring communities a great opportunity to meet the team, dive into the Calgary Plan, and get a sneak peak at the draft planning being shared publicly on June 24.

For more than 30 years, in collaboration with donors and partners, Parks Foundation Calgary has been a catalyst in pioneering and creating outdoor sport and green spaces for all Calgarians to enjoy. Learn more about the current and future projects planned in Ward 9.

In June, during National Indigenous History Month, we celebrate the rich heritage of our First Nations, Inuit, and Métis Peoples. 

Indigenous Peoples celebrate their history with pride and preservation. For those not Indigenous or new to Canada, this observance offers an opportunity to learn about Indigenous Peoples' pivotal role in shaping our nation.

Every year on July 1, Calgarians and visitors gather downtown for Canada Day. The free and family-friendly City of Calgary event showcases our country’s culture and Calgary’s diverse community. Each year’s event features an Indigenous showcase and powwow, cultural performances and activities, live music, fireworks and more.

Help make a Canada Day for everyone by filling out the survey at calgary.ca/CanadaDaySurvey. The deadline to provide your input is July 4, 2024. Feedback collected will be used to shape Calgary’s Canada Day celebrations in 2025 and beyond.

Neighbour Day is Calgary’s celebration of community connection. Held each year on the third Saturday in June, Neighbour Day is a step toward creating welcoming and inclusive communities where neighbours connect and belong every day of the year.

Sport Calgary is proud to host All Sport One Day on June 15th and August 17th this year.

All Sport One Day is an amazing opportunity for Calgary children and youth to try a new sport and discover a new passion. With hundreds of sessions featuring dozens of exciting activities to choose from, parents and caregivers can enroll children (ages 6 - 17) in FREE sport sessions throughout the city.

Registration opens June 4th at 6 PM for the June 15th event. Online registration is highly encouraged to guarantee each child’s spot, but they do also accept drop-in participants, if space permits. More details on the August 17th session will be released closer to the date.

In collaboration of the Albert Park Radisson Heights Community Association, Love with Humanity recently opened their newest outdoor community food bank, a multicultural little free library, and their very first free pet food bank.

Community members are invited to help mark the Grand Opening of this new resource. Please stop by the Albert Park Radisson Heights Community Association - 2636 12 Ave SE from 1pm - 2pm. Light refreshments will be provided.

The City of Calgary is proud to introduce the Secondary Suite Incentive Program, an initiative aimed at encouraging safe and accessible housing for Calgarians. The Secondary Suite Incentive Program, which is a component of Home is Here: The City of Calgary’s Housing Strategy, provides a qualifying homeowner up to $10,000 to cover a portion of construction costs to develop and register a safe secondary suite.

You’re invited to attend the Travel Safe Student Video Contest Screening Party!

Students in grades 6 to 12 were asked to create an original 30-second video to promote safety while traveling on city streets, sidewalks, or pathways.

The top 10 video finalists will be celebrated publicly at a free screening party on Monday June 3, 2024 at the Patricia A. Whelan Performance Hall at the Central Library from 7 to 8 p.m.

The 2024 Servus Calgary Marathon is taking place on Sunday, May 25th. Celebrating its 60th year, the Calgary Marathon is Canada’s longest running marathon and Alberta’s Best Road Race.

In order to ensure both runner and road user safety, there will be a variety of road closures throughout Calgary. You can view their interactive road closure map to learn more and pre-plan your day.

Our office is seeking proposals from Indigenous artists with a connection to the Treaty 7 area interested in partnering to design and create an illustrated map about water. This map will highlight water resources, infrastructure, and landmarks, while sharing stories and raising awareness about water conservation, management, history, and the importance of water in Ward 9 and through Calgary.

Beginning on May 17 through June 7, 2024, the City of Calgary will be collecting feedback on Phase 2 of the MNP Access Strategy. This project aims to explore improvements to area walking, wheeling, and transit connections to the MNP Community & Sport Centre from surrounding destinations.

Through the online engage portal, residents can share their priority ranking of a number of short- and long-term improvements pertaining to mobility and safety that were identified during Phase 1 outreach.

There are several proposed active-modes/bikeway enhancements that could positively impact Ward 9. Please take a moment to share your feedback, and ensure safe and improved connectivity for East Calgary.

Over the long weekend, May 18-20, both the Blue Line and Red Line trains will be closed through downtown.

The Blue Line will be closed between Bridgeland and Sunalta stations.

The Red Line will be closed between 39 Ave and Sunnyside stations.

Shuttle buses will replace train service and run every 5 min.

After a 15-day Public Hearing, City Council has voted to approve citywide rezoning to allow for the construction of a variety low-density homes across Calgary.

In response to feedback from Calgarians, amendments have been introduced to address concerns regarding community engagement during the development permit phase, modified parking requirements, and adjustments to secondary suite allowances for row houses.

The Greater Forest Lawn Communities Local Area Plan is currently in its final phase: REALIZE. The project is ready to be presented and brought forward to the community and Council for review and decision.

The GFL LAP sets the vision for the evolution of the area over the next 30 years including direction on future development and investment that residents, landowners, builders/developers, City Planners, and Councillors can commonly refer to as new development and investment ideas are proposed.

The City of Calgary Mobility business unit is making investments in safe and accessible infrastructure for Calgarians.

Ward 9 can anticipate:

• 15 Pavement rehabilitation projects

• 273 Concrete repairs

• 6 New signals

• 22 Wheelchair ramp improvements

Applications for the Utility Box Public Art program are currently being accepted.

The Utility Box Public Art program works with communities to create temporary artworks on local utility boxes. Selected community organizations will receive funding to partner with artists to create the artworks. The organizations can work with an artist of their choice or Calgary Arts Development can help connect you with an artist.
