GreenLine Due Diligence Investigations - 26 Ave SE Station

Beginning October 12, Green Line’s Development Partner, Bow Transit Connectors, will be undertaking a series of borehole tests in the area surrounding the future 26 Avenue SE LRT station (around Ramsay and Highfield). Impacts are limited to City-owned and private property and are not expected to impact general traffic in the area. Each investigation is expected to take one-to-two days. Where there are potential impacts to businesses, Green Line will coordinate directly with those who may be affected.

Critical Water Services Repair: 20A Street S.E. between 72 Ave and 76 Ave

The City has identified a failed piece of infrastructure in the wastewater sewer system that has resulted in back-ups in some homes along 20A Street S.E. This piece of infrastructure needs to be replaced to ensure the reliability of the wastewater collection system in the area.

Construction will begin Thursday, October 12, 2023 and is expected to be complete Saturday, October 14, 2023. Work will take place from 6:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.

COUNCIL VOTES TO APPROVE CALGARY'S UPDATED HOUSING STRATEGY

After three hard and emotional days, City Council voted 12-3 to pass the Housing Strategy in its entirety. The actions outlined in this strategy make up a comprehensive and critically needed framework to address housing affordability, ensuring more Calgarians have a safe place to call home.

Over 1,322 pages of written submissions were sent in, 162 members of the public came out to speak, and our office received hundreds of emails. Overwhelmingly, the stories of those desperate to find or keep a roof over their head are the ones that dominated the conversation.

8 AVENUE NE - Road Closure for STAIR CONSTRUCTION

Bridge Closure - 8 Avenue NE - Friday, September 8 – Monday, September 11

The City is replacing a portion of the sidewalk on this bridge in preparation to tie in the new stairs from below. This work cannot be completed while safely maintaining vehicle traffic on the bridge.

At 9:00pm on Friday, September 8, the 8 Avenue NE bridge over Deerfoot Trail will be closed until Monday, September 11 at 5:00am. The road closure is between 13a Street NE and 16a Street NE.

This closure impacts vehicle traffic only. Pedestrian and cyclist access will remain open.

Inglewood - Water Main Replacement 9 Avenue SE

The City needs to replace the existing watermain on 9 Avenue S.E. between 12 Street and 13 Street S.E. due to its age, and condition. We will also be installing a new section of watermain in the intersection of 9 Avenue and 12 Street S.E. as part of this work.

We heard from businesses how important certainty of start dates is for this work, and we want to confirm this work will start the week of September 20, 2023.

2023 Fall aquatic service adjustments

As many industries have experienced over the last several years, the City of Calgary continues to experience challenges in recruiting and hiring certificated candidates for swim instructors and lifeguards. These staffing shortages have resulted in reduced operational capacity and program cutbacks.

As a result, over the summer, the City needed to reduce operations at several smaller community aquatic centres in order to increase capacity at some of the bigger pools. Our hope was that service levels would be able to resume this fall, however, amendments are still needed at this time.

Calgary is experiencing a housing crisis.

Our city has grown significantly over the past several years and, at this moment, one in five Calgary households are unable to afford where they currently live. This equates to more than 80,000 households who are spending more than 30% of their income on housing. As we anticipate welcoming another 110,000 new residents over the next four years, the scale of the challenge we face is significant.

Ogden Traffic Calming Project

The traffic calming curbs along 18 Street and 66 Avenue SE in Lynnwood received a colourful update thanks to local artist Mike Hooves.

This traffic calming infrastructure was installed earlier in the year thanks to the Millican Ogden Community Associations’ partnership with the Federation of Calgary Communities ActivateYYC Bump Outs and Parklets micro-grant program. Bump outs are designed to narrow intersections, calming traffic by making turning radii tighter for cars as well as shortening crossing distances for pedestrians.

Manitou Road SE - Local Drainage Improvement Project

As part of The City’s Local Drainage Improvements (LDI) Program, we will be working in your area to improve the stormwater system to alleviate excessive pooling and flooding that can happen. This work includes installing storm pipes, storm drains (or catch basins), and upgrading existing catch basins and connecting pipes to increase the flow of stormwater into the system.
