11/12 Street SE Cycle Lane Reconfiguration
If you’ve travelled along 11th/12th Street SE in Inglewood or Ramsay over the last several weeks, you’ll have noticed a reconfiguration of the protected wheeling lane between the Zoo Bridge in Inglewood (8th Ave SE) and the former Lilydale site in Ramsay (21st Ave SE.)
These changes are a temporary setup to what will eventually be a robust public realm redesign along 11/12 Street SE as we begin to build the GreenLine.
The former bike lane along 11/12 Street SE was a pilot project that had reached its conclusion. There were notable challenges with the route as it was - namely, there were visibility issues resulting in several collisions at the pinch point at 11th Avenue SE, where vehicle traffic emerging off of 11th Ave to turn right onto 12 Street was often forced to enter and impede the path of bike lane users as they rode north in the bike lane.
The reworked setup as it stands allows for safer flow of active modes traffic for those riding both north and south along 11/12 Ave SE and conforms to non-pilot bike lane standards.
We have heard from mobility users and residents that the current configuration still poses some challenges, however, the public realm improvements that will come with the GreenLine will again reimagine how these multi-modal lanes are configured, creating a more optimal and safe user experience for active mobility users and pedestrians, while also streamlining connectivity and flow for vehicles.
