Munro Park Updates
Munro Park, located at 425 18 Ave NE was initially developed in 1948. The park is located in Ward 4, however due to its close proximity to Renfrew in Ward 9, we wanted to share the following information with the community.
While the park is currently well-used, there is potential to further enliven the lives of local residents, enhance local business activities, and improve connectivity in the area. The City of Calgary has implemented some improvements in Munro Park, but there is a larger vision to add playful amenities and connect different park spaces into a cohesive design, considering operational needs from the early stages. The design development phases of this project will inspire contributions on the possibilities before recommending creative, fun, and inclusive investments for all seasons.
Positioned within one block of Main Street and Primary Transit Network corridors (16 Ave, 50m to the south; Edmonton Trail adjacent to the west), Munro Park plays a crucial role in the evolving landscape. A grocery store development to the southeast generates significant traffic, and the project aims to upgrade the park and surrounding streets to create a revitalized neighborhood destination, strategically investing in an area undergoing growth and change.
Following three engagement sessions held in 2014, the Winston Heights Mountview Community Association initiated a master plan for Munro Park in 2015. The first phase, completed in 2017, included construction of a walking and running track with exercise nodes, additional picnic tables, trees, shrubs, and the removal of the ball field.
Current engagement is intended to address design proposals made in Phase 2 improvements of the park Masterplan, completed in 2014. These improvements initially proposed an enhanced playground and additional amenities such as a small skatepark, additional pathways, and a drinking fountain. However, the final scope of work will be influenced by this public engagement process.
