Temporary Closure of Southview Off-Leash Area
In order to facilitate construction in the area, the Government of Alberta is temporarily closing the Southview off-leash area on Provincial Land on the Western Headworks canal (near the 17th Avenue SE bus rapid transit bridge.) The closure is expeted to begin sometime in November and last for about a year.
Below is a map of the area planned for closure. The highlighted section will be fenced off, signed, and excluded from public use.
The closure of this area is to enable to removal of large volumes of silt/sediment material from the canal. This will be an active construction area with heavy equipment hauling material, which requires additional space for equipment turnaround and maneuvering, staging of equipment and materials, and storage.
The Lower Parking lot (near the Canoe Club) is expected to become the primary active haul route for heavy equipment and will also need to be excluded from public use for periods of time. The Province is working with the Canoe Club on scheduling and access needs to their building throughout the construction period.
The City will install signage with QR codes at the site location that will share more information including information on alternative nearby off-leash areas. For more information on City of Calgary off-leash areas, including an interactive map of park locations throughout Calgary, please visit calgary.ca/parks/off-leash-locations.
We will update this project page as firmer timelines and additional information is shared by the province.
