Construction Update: Inglewood Sanitary Trunk Phase Two
The City of Calgary is preparing to begin Phase Two of the Inglewood Sanitary Trunk (IST) project.
The IST Phase Two project will increase the waster capacity of Inglewood and other north Calgary communities; it involves micro-tunneling beneath the Bow River to connect two existing sanitary pipes.
When will work start?
Contractors set up in December south of the Bow River. This preparation means they’ll be able to begin construction efficiently and safely in the coming weeks.
Most construction activity will occur between 7a.m. to 7p.m. Monday through Saturday, unless otherwise required due to ground conditions. If evening work is required, updates will be shared with affected residents beforehand.
Area residents may temporarily experience increased noise and vibration, as well as increased construction traffic and noise. The City is working closely with the contractor to mitigate these effects wherever possible. They will be installing a concrete block wall on a portion of the south end of our site to decrease noise for adjacent residents.
Temporary one-way on 7 Avenue S.E.
In early December, we removed a few trees from the area for the contractor to have a safe space to work efficiently. Removing a tree is a last resort, and we’ve taken steps to repurpose any trees that need to be removed while retaining trees wherever possible. For example, some of the trees removed in December have been salvaged and stored for future City of Calgary Parks projects.
The site has access constraints due to existing trees, and existing overhead utility lines.
To balance the needs of the project with these constraints, we will temporarily change 7 Avenue S.E. to a one-way westbound vehicle flow from 10 Street to 8 Street S.E. (see a map above).
This configuration will allow the contractor to safely move around the site, will maintain access for residents, and let pedestrians follow the Bow River pathway detour.
We expect the one-way restriction to be in place until project completion in summer 2025.
Temporary parking restrictions
We understand the importance of parking to the community. We have taken steps to preserve on-street parking during construction wherever possible. Some physical constraints mean that on-street parking can’t be accommodated everywhere, but this will only be temporary.
As part of the one-way detour, there will be temporary parking restrictions on the north side of 7 Avenue S.E. and the west side of the 8 Street S.E. cul de sac. Please be alert and watch for signage.
