2023 summer aquatic service adjustments
As many industries have experienced over the last several years, the City of Calgary continues to experience challenges in recruiting and hiring certificated candidates for swim instructors and lifeguards. These staffing shortages have resulted in reduced operational capacity and program cutbacks.
The City continues to hire staff and increase service levels so they are more aligned with the expectations of Calgarians. Overall service delivery has returned to 85 percent of pre-pandemic levels.
Summer service adjustments
To meet the staffing requirements for summer recreation offerings, temporary adjustments will be made at the following facilities for the summer season:
The pools at Southland and Village Square Leisure Centres will increase public swimming to seven days per week from June 26 – Sept. 4.
The planned seasonal opening of Glenmore Reservoir is May 1, weather permitting, for sailing, canoeing, kayaking, facility bookings, and access to boat launches.
To support the above adjustments, changes will be made at the following facilities that typically experience less customer demand during the summer season:
Inglewood Aquatic Centre will reduce operations from seven days per week to three days per week, Friday to Sunday, beginning June 26.
Shouldice Aquatic Centre will close beginning June 26.
Foothills Aquatic Centre will increase operations from four days per week to five days per week, Monday to Friday, beginning July 5 to support the service reduction at the nearby Shouldice Aquatic Centre.
Swimming lesson offerings at Southland and Village Square Leisure Centres will pause for July and August to maximize public swim times.
These services are expected to return to current operating hours on Sept. 5, 2023.
