Senior Volunteers and Bus Driver Needed in GFL
The Brenda Stafford Foundation (BSF) has been engaging with Seniors in Greater Forest Lawn to collect feedback about service gaps and barriers in the area.
The two most common recurring themes identified were resource navigation and transportation.
To help address the issue of resource navigation, the Brenda Strafford Foundation (BSF), in collaboration with the Kerby Centre, Greater Forest Lawn 55+ Society, and The Alex Community Food Centre, co-hosted a Seniors Health and Wellness Expo on June 9, 2022. The purpose of the event was to provide an opportunity for older adults to learn about the programs, services, and resources that are available in their community. Exhibitors also had the chance to collaborate with like-minded organizations and get to know older adults in their neighbourhood.
The next step is to develop a local transportation initiative for adults 55+ in Greater Forest Lawn. BSF has a bus that is available to use and will lead operational activities, but we require the collaboration and expertise of the community to ensure that this initiative is accessible and acceptable.
The ask:
A volunteer bus driver is required. The individual must have their Class 4 license and be able to provide a clean driver’s abstract as well as a Criminal Record Check and Vulnerable Sector Search. Please forward this opportunity to anyone who might be interested and kindly advise them to contact me directly. To pilot, the time commitment would be one four-hour shift per week.
If you are interested in being a part of the advisory committee for this transportation initiative, please let BSF know. It is important to have strong advocates and key players at the table.
BSF hopes to pilot this initiative in January 2023.
If you have questions or concerns or you would like to share your feedback on this initiative, please reach out to Jenna Naylor, Research and Innovative Practice Manager for the Brenda Stafford Foundation.
