INGLEWOOD BIRD SANCTUARY RECONNECTION PROJECT - Pathway Closure
To accommodate repairs that will restore healthy ecosystems & protect the Inglewood Bird Sanctuary from future flooding, a portion of the Inglewood Bird Sanctuary trail northwest of Ninth Ave. S.E. will be temporarily closed due to a habitat restoration project within the park. There will be occasional delays of up to 15 minutes along the pathway near the Sanctuary from Sept 15 until mid December. Please follow the onsite signage.
The other trails within the park will remain open during the closure. Learn more about this project or contact 311.
About this Project
The Inglewood Bird Sanctuary is one of Calgary’s most important natural parks. The lagoon, which is enjoyed by fish, birds and park goers alike – needs to be updated to ensure its health and longevity.
The project will see a reconnection of the lagoon to the Bow River, providing it with a continuous stream of water through improvements to the riverbank and surrounding area. This will improve the stability and quality of the water in the lagoon, benefiting the health of the birds, fish and other wildlife that visit the park. It will also create a fish passage to prevent fish from becoming trapped in the lagoon and add protection against future flood events.
The environmental importance of this work has been recognized through grants from the Alberta Environment, Environment Canada and Fisheries and Ocean (DFO).
