Wastewater Leak to Bow River
Over the weekend, crews detected an unplanned wastewater leak into the Bow River from a pipe near the Bonnybrook Wastewater Treatment Plant. City officials remain onsite and have confirmed that the leak has been contained. They continue to monitor water quality at the site as well as downstream, and are working to repair and determine the root cause of the leak.
Calgary’s drinking water is drawn far upstream from the site of the leak, and remains unaffected and safe to drink. Alberta Health Services indicated that the risk to the public as a result of this event is extremely low, though as a precaution, we ask that people and pets please stay away from the river near this area.
Some pathway closures and area detours are required to secure the site to ensure staff and equipment can access the work area safely. Some additional lighting has also been installed around the site to allow for work to continue throughout the evenings.
Details on findings about the root cause of the leak and future repair plans will be shared when they are available. The City of Calgary Water Services team will continue to work with Alberta Health Services and Environment and Protected Areas (EPA) to monitor the situation, including sampling and testing of drinking water to ensure it remains safe.
Further updates will be posted on City of Calgary Newsroom as they become available.
