Coordinated Community Extreme Weather Response
As the weather turns cold and the we experience our first few days of snowfall, it's important to be aware of the resources available for our neighbours in need.
Entering its third year of operation, the Extreme Weather Response is a collaborative, coordinated strategy designed to address the needs of unhoused persons facing extreme weather conditions. The strategy works with existing emergency shelters, social service organizations, and City services to offer space and support to those most in need during the difficult winter months.
The Extreme Weather Response will be ready for activation starting November 1, 2024 should the weather require it.
Some Operational Updates Include:
Daytime warming spaces for 425 individuals will be available, with support and assistance at all sites.
Over 1,800 emergency shelter spaces will be available in Calgary 24/7.
12 Community Outreach Teams will be present along and around the LRT line to provide outreach to people who are experiencing vulnerabilities and who are sheltering on transit and at transit stations. This collaboration includes Transit Public Safety Officers and Alpha House Outreach staff, and in collaboration with other outreach organizations.
Enhanced coordination of grassroots outreach service organizations to engage those who are unsheltered and the provision of basic needs (food, clothing, hygiene items etc.)
For the second year, the Emergency Shelter Shuttle Service (provided by Calgary Transit in collaboration with Transit Peace Officers and Alpha House Outreach) will provide transport to those who are unsheltered, including those who have been sheltering in LRT stations, to available shelter space. The shelter shuttle will run overnight, seven days a week from December 1 to March 31.
