Fire Prevention Week - October 8-14, 2023
2023 Fire Prevention Week is happening October 8-14. In addition to serving as a reminder to check the batteries and functionality of your smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors, this year’s focus is on sharing simple but important actions you can take while cooking to keep you and your family safe.
The Calgary Fire Department will be hosting Open Houses throughout the city on October 8, 2023, from 1 – 4 p.m. These Open Houses will be held at fire stations in the communities of:
Forest Heights Fire Station – 123 44 Street S.E.
Temple Fire Station – 7199 Temple Drive N.E.
McKenzie Towne Fire Station – 6 McKenzie Towne Gate S.E.
Signal Hill Fire Station – 3800 69 Street S.W.
Calgarians of all ages are invited to drop by to talk to the firefighters and special guests, tour the trucks, enter to win some awesome prizes, and learn more about fire prevention.
In Calgary, cooking is the leading cause of home fires and home fire injuries. Unattended cooking is the leading cause of cooking fires and deaths.
Follow these key safety tips to help reduce the risk of a cooking fire.
Watch what you heat. Always pay close attention to what you are frying, grilling, broiling, boiling, or baking. Set a timer to remind you that you are cooking. If you leave the kitchen, for even a brief period of time, turn off the stove and remove any pots or pans from the burner.
Turn pot handles toward the back of the stove. Always keep a lid nearby when cooking. If a small grease fire starts, slide the lid over the pan if you feel safe doing so, then turn off the burner, exit your home, and call 9-1-1.
Have a “kid and pet-free zone” of one metre around the stove or grill and anywhere hot food or drink is prepared or carried.
