East Central Phase 2 Improvements
The City of Calgary is working to make our city more livable by improving access and connectivity for people who walk, wheel and drive along 19 Avenue S.E.
As with all road construction projects, there will be some temporary impacts to the 19 Avenue S.E. in the coming months. The City is committed to minimizing any disruptions as best possible.
2022 construction activities along 19 Avenue S.E. will be broken up into 10 sections, to be staged throughout 2022 to minimize the size and duration of any localized impacts (e.g. road closures) during construction. Although road construction is always weather-dependent, The City anticipates construction to be complete by the end of this year.
Work is now underway at the west end of 19 Avenue S.E., from 26 Street S.E. to just east of 27 Street S.E. This section is anticipated to take approximately two weeks to complete. This work will require temporary road closures. Detours will be in place so people who walk and people who drive can still travel through the area.
When 19 Avenue S.E. construction is complete, here are some improvements you can look forward to:
Addition of missing sidewalks and upgrades to existing substandard sidewalks
Installation of dedicated wheeling lanes – both protected on-street and off-street facilities
New permanent curb extensions at intersections, reducing the width of the road and encouraging slower vehicle speeds.
A new traffic signal at 19 Avenue & 36 Street S.E. was installed in 2021.
These features will improve the safety and predictability of road use, provide a wheeling network connection to support local and regional travel, and support pedestrian access.
