Seasonal Green Cart Changes
Beginning November 1st, green cart pickup will shift to once every other week. This change will be in effect until March when we transition back to weekly pickups.
Why do we change to every-other-week collection for green cart this time of year?
During the winter months, green carts are primarily used for food waste and there is less yard waste to collect. As the carts are not as full, collection is reduced to every other week in the winter months.
In the spring, when yard waste becomes more common and the weather warms up, green cart collection will resume weekly pickup.
Our cart capacity studies (performed 4 times per year for the past 10 years) indicate that our current collection frequency is meeting the needs of the vast majority of Calgarians while also balancing operational needs and our budget.
Extra Yard Waste
If you have yard waste from your fall cleanup that does not fit inside your green cart, you are welcome to use paper yard waste bags for your overflow.
Fill your green cart first, then use paper yard waste bags when your green cart is full.
Roll the tops of the bags closed to prevent spills and allow your collector to pick up bags properly.
Place bags at least 0.5 m (2 ft) away from the side of your cart.
Extra paper yard waste bags must weigh less than 20 kg (44 pounds). If you can lift with one hand, it should be okay.
Fall Yard Waste Drop-off
Residents can also drop off yard waste at any City landfill for free from Friday, September 23. 2022 to Saturday, December 3rd 2022.
Loads should only have leaves, branches, plants and grass clippings.
We do not accept sod or food scraps. Put these items in your green cart.
Shake the soil off plants and roots.
Any loads containing garbage or sod will be subject to regular landfill fees.
Composting for sod is not available at City landfills. If you take sod to the landfill, you will be charged the basic sanitary rate.
Commercial customers with yard waste will be subject to regular landfill fees.
Commercial loads are not accepted at Shepard.
