A Visit with Youth Centres of Calgary - Ogden
The team at Youth Centres of Calgary (YCC) in Ogden recently welcomed the Ward 9 office into their space to see first-hand the meaningful work they are doing to lift up and support youth in our city.
Jane Wachowich formed Youth Centres of Calgary with the vision of creating a safe space for kids to be kids. Understanding that children are more likely to have positive outcomes and a greater chance at success in life when they have access to supportive, caring services, YCC strives to be an inclusive space for youth in the community.
YCC identified youth between the ages of 10-15 as a demographic that is most vulnerable to negative influence, as well as an age group that is generally underserved. By creating a home-like, after-school-focused youth centre that provides free, non-denominational, and inclusive programming, YCC is able to foster resilience and self-confidence through mentoring, homework help, food, games, sports, and music.
By reducing the financial, physical, and emotional impacts of poverty on youth and their families, kids are able to genuinely experience belonging. At YCC, kids learn to build responsibility, life skills, and self-esteem through connection and involvement, and access programs and activities that help develop practical skills and instill positive attitudes.
SUPPORT YOUTH CENTRES OF CALGARY
Youth Centre of Calgary exists because of the generosity of people and local businesses in the community. There are always opportunities to help - donate your expertise or time, supplies, or monetary funds.
