For more than a century, thousands of Indigenous children were taken from their homes and placed in residential schools, as part of a policy of assimilation into European and Christian culture.

Join us to commemorate Indian residential school victims, honour survivors and their families, and commit to acting on reconciliation.

Everyone is strongly encouraged to wear orange as a sign of support and to honour the children who didn't return from residential schools across the country.

Community-Run Public Art Microgrant Program 2023

Recognizing that public art opportunities can come from grassroots ideas that are initiated and led by communities, Calgary Arts Development invites proposals for community-run public art projects.

This opportunity is open to community-run organizations, including informal groups that define themselves in terms of distinct communities, neighbourhood associations, and non-profit organizations or charitable organizations.

Community-run organizations in Calgary/Mohkinsstsis are invited to apply for funding to hire local artists and create public art in their neighbourhoods. Communities are welcome to team up with local artists at any level of experience to explore any form of public art in any part of the city.

Council Votes to Approve Calgary's Updated Housing Strategy

After three hard and emotional days, City Council voted 12-3 to pass the Housing Strategy in its entirety. The actions outlined in this strategy make up a comprehensive and critically needed framework to address housing affordability, ensuring more Calgarians have a safe place to call home.

Over 1,322 pages of written submissions were sent in, 162 members of the public came out to speak, and our office received hundreds of emails. Overwhelmingly, the stories of those desperate to find or keep a roof over their head are the ones that dominated the conversation.

Off-Site Levies Bylaw Update

2023 FALL AQUATIC SERVICE ADJUSTMENTS

As many industries have experienced over the last several years, the City of Calgary continues to experience challenges in recruiting and hiring certificated candidates for swim instructors and lifeguards. These staffing shortages have resulted in reduced operational capacity and program cutbacks.

As a result, over the summer, the City needed to reduce operations at several smaller community aquatic centres in order to increase capacity at some of the bigger pools. Our hope was that service levels would be able to resume this fall, however, amendments are still needed at this time.

RedLine CTrain Closure - September 2nd - 4th, 2023

Starting Saturday, September 2 (start of service) until Monday, September 4 (end of service), there will be no RedLine CTrain service between Erlton/Stampede and Southland Stations due to CTrain maintenance works.

The RedLine CTrain from the south will terminate at Southland Station. Customers travelling towards Tuscany will be required to transfer to the CTrain Replacement Shuttle at Southland Station to Erlton/Stampede Station.

The RedLine CTrain from the northwest will terminate at Erlton/Stampede Station. Customers travelling towards Somerset-Bridlewood will be required to transfer to the CTrain Replacement Shuttle at Erlton/Stampede Station to Southland Station.

RedLine CTrain Replacement Shuttle (Erlton/Stampede – Southland):

The RedLine CTrain Replacement Shuttle will provide two-way service making stops at Erlton/Stampede, 39 Avenue, Chinook, Heritage, and Southland Stations.

Have your say on The City of Calgary’s Housing Strategy

Calgary is experiencing a housing crisis.

Our city has grown significantly over the past several years and, at this moment, one in five Calgary households are unable to afford where they currently live. This equates to more than 80,000 households who are spending more than 30% of their income on housing. As we anticipate welcoming another 110,000 new residents over the next four years, the scale of the challenge we face is significant.

Exacerbated by low vacancy rates, higher-than-normal rent increases, and escalating home prices, more Calgarians are at risk of losing access to safe housing within their means. Additionally, as demand continues to outpace supply, our housing crisis threatens Calgary’s competitive advantage as one of the world’s most livable cities.

Simply put- we do not have enough housing to meet the needs of our current or growing population.

2023 Calgary Pride

Calgary Pride is in full swing - from August 18th – September 3rd, 2023. There are dozens of exciting events being held across Calgary that celebrate and uplift the 2SLGBTQIA+ community.

The Calgary Pride Festival takes place the weekend of September 2nd and 3rd, 2023, and consists of both 18+ and all-ages festival days at Prince’s Island Park. The annual pride parade is set to happen on Sunday, September 3rd, starting at 11 AM, beginning at 9th Ave and 4th ST, and marching its way SE, ending at Fort Calgary.

Back-to-School: Donate to Help Support Single Moms in Calgary

Single Mom Strategies is a new Calgary-based non-profit organization helping single mothers facing various poverty-related barriers. By providing access to essential needs and connecting families to resources and community, SMS hopes to empower mothers and their children through poverty reduction, mental health support, housing, and food security.

Right now, SMS is hosting a fundraiser through Canada Helps for back-to-school. As most parents know, the costs associated with the supplies needed for school can add up quickly. SMS is collecting donations to purchase new backpacks and school supplies for single-family households that could use some additional support. Your donation will ensure kids can head back-to-school worry-free. If you are able, please donate today.

No Fixed Address has a new home, now popping up in Inglewood Tuesdays through Saturdays from 11am - 3pm. Stop by the gravel lot next to The Apothecary on 9th Ave and 9th Street SE and support this awesome social venture!

Operating as a mobile soup kitchen serving up radical hospitality, No Fixed Address provides delicious food to the general public, as well as those in need. Through their pay-it-forward ‘huggabowl program’, those who have the means can purchase a bowl of soup for themselves, and can choose to upgrade their order to provide a token for a free meal to someone in need. Tokens can be left at the food cart for people to use as needed, or you can take your token and distribute it to someone that could use a bit of extra kindness.

UPDATE: CHANGES TO THE RESIDENTIAL PARKING PERMIT PROGRAM

In response to resident concerns and to accommodate requests to review parking signage, parking permit user fees for the Residential Parking Permit Program (RPP) will not be implemented until after Monday, December 4, 2023. Until then, there is only a fee to obtain a Market Permit or Low-Income Market Permit.
